History

In 1933 Reverend J.H. Winn organized Winn’s Memorial Baptist Church. They held a

meeting under a tent on these grounds. Reverend J. H. Winn was called to Fort Worth

Texas and Reverend R. E. Davis of Austin, TX was called to Pastor Winn’s Memorial.

Services were held twice a month and he traveled by bus and resided in the Thompson

family home for church services on Sundays. After Reverend Davis, Reverend Murray,

and Reverend Means were the Pastors. After the short stay of Reverend Means,

Reverend G. M. Releford became Pastor. Under the leadership of Reverend G. M.

Releford a building was moved to 605 Madison Street and remodeled in 1948. A

cornerstone was dedicated and services held.

After the leadership of Pastor Releford, Reverend Means, Reverend Murray, and

Reverend Carrington were Pastors followed by Reverend J. R. Williams who served for

ten years. Reverend Williams left in 1974. Reverend A. C. Franklin then became

Pastor for the next two years. Reverend James Fowler served for the next twelve

years. After the leadership of Reverend Fowler, Reverend Herbert Nash, Reverend

Johnny Cashmere, and Reverend Mack Robinson served as Pastors the number of

years for these Pastors served is not known at this time. Our present Pastor is the

Reverend D. W. Townsend, he has been here since October 2, 2001. Under the

leadership of Pastor Townsend, the church has continued to grow both spiritually and

financially. On February 15, 2004 we had our groundbreaking service and entered our

new church edifice on May 15, 2005.
